Developing People
Our approach to training and development - How we do it
Albert EinsteinProblems cannot be solved by the level of awareness that created them.
How do we do it?
PSM uses a method inspired by Socratic dialectic. We call it the ‘questioning method’. It is based on the principle that all learning is recollection, and so the idea is to ‘draw out’ knowledge and understanding from people rather than ‘put it in’.
By asking powerful open questions, we challenge people to examine the current thought patterns, principles, ideas and beliefs that are currently governing their behaviour and ways of working. Through open, frank and direct dialogue we clear the way, untying any knots of misunderstanding or blockage, to allow space for new ideas or solutions to come to light.
Dialectic pulls the rug from under our fixed ideas and notions about every subject, and gives us space to think in a new and fresh way. Because we are being asked questions all the time we get engaged in the discussion and we tackle the subject head on. This really drives us and motivates us to continue working and exploring.
The difference with using this method of dialectic is that it allows each person to come to the answers themselves. This results in real learning, lasting change, and many unforgettable penny-dropping moments for our clients!
Many of our clients say that they never forget what they learn during our sessions. The reason is simple: you cannot forget what you have discovered yourself.
Characteristics of the Dialectic method:
- » Questions drive the discussion
- » Produces an interactive, dynamic and engaging workshop style
- » Encourages self responsibility and self reliance
- » Results in a non-threatening, non-exposing environment
- » Participation is at the will of the participant, nothing is enforced
- » Lets people come to the answers themselves
- » People take ownership for the outcomes of the discussions, and therefore it creates a very high degree of motivation and interest
- » Underlying attitudes and ideas are drawn out and highlighted
- » Creates possibility for a shift in thinking
