Who we are

The PSM Story

Each of us has much more hidden inside us than we have had a chance to explore. Unless we create an environment that enables us to discover the limits of our potential, we will never know what we have inside of us.
Muhammed Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize Winner - 2006

In 1994 Brian McGeough was a member of the senior management team of a large multinational company based in Dublin. During this time he and his staff attended a 2-Day ‘Time management’ course in the Hudson Bay hotel in Athlone. He was chatting to the staff during one of the breaks about the course, and to his horror, he discovered that the highlights of the course for them were in fact the lunch, the bar, and the two days away from the office! Not a single mention of the course, it was nothing more than an interruption on the long weekend. The first nail in the coffin was when the guy running the course arrived late on the second day! It was a time management course...

When the bill for the training arrived, Brian felt that, apart from the great camaraderie that arose in the group over those few days, the actual course itself had a minimal effect, if any.

Then Brian decided to ring some of his staff who attended the course to discover what effect it had had, if any. This was the final nail in the coffin. One man reported that the diary system supplied on the course worth about £150 at the time, he had given to his kids to play with. Another attendee could remember no real detail from the course except the pleasant hotel amenities and the lovely swimming pool.

One month later, Brian resigned from his highly paid, secure pensionable job, and decided to brave the world of training and development.

The Process:

Armed with 25 years of managerial experience, a great love of philosophy, and a strong sense that training people on human matters was very different from training someone how to use a computer. Brian decided to do something about this problem.

In 1995, he sold his house, and set up his company with the funds.

PSM opened its doors in the living room of the new rented house, and ran its first stress management course in the Berkley Court Hotel with 10 participants.

We’ve been in business ever since.

PSM has never left its original vision: to create training and development that is based on principles rather than text books, on practical wisdom rather than complex theory, and to meet people where they are and make their working lives richer and better.

Our fundamental belief is that if people develop, the organisation will change.

What's in a name?

We’re not going to tell you what PSM stands for! Suffice to say in the beginning it was three words, but we decided they were too limiting for us, so we started to use the acronym PSM. Have fun guessing!
